Copying a Page to a Template or a Template to a Page in PageBuilder Editor

For editorial purposes, the primary tabs within PageBuilder Editor are for Pages and Templates. Pages are used for manually curated, standalone content like your homepage or specific section fronts.

In contrast, templates define a design for blocks and dynamically pull in content, allowing you to apply the same layout across multiple URLs—such as you might do with article templates and automated section fronts. Pages will have a unique URI (for example, “/homepage” or “/sports”), while templates are served by resolvers and will not have unique URIs.

However, there are certain circumstances when you may wish to utilize the format, styling, etc., of a page to create a template or when you might want to use a template to create a page with a unique URI.

If you want more information about creating versions of pages and/or templates, see PageBuilder Editor: Creating and Publishing Versions of Pages and Templates.

Copying a Page to a Template

Imagine you've created a Sports Page in the PageBuilder Editor. Its layout and curation make it a strong candidate for reuse in other sections.

To copy that page to a template, complete the following:

  1. Navigate to PageBuilder Editor > Pages.

  2. Search for the Sports Page in the list.

  3. Click the ellipsis icon icon_ellipsis.png, and select Copy to new Template. The New template left pane opens.

  4. Enter a Template Name for the new template, such as section.

  5. Click Create Template.

The new, unpublished template opens in the Curate Workspace, where you can make necessary changes.

To use this template, configure a resolver to direct traffic to it. See PageBuilder Resolvers for information on how to configure resolvers within PageBuilder.

Note

You must publish the new Template before creating the resolver.

The new template will now appear within your list of options under the templates tab.

Copying a Template to a Page

For this example, you have a section template that you would like to use to create a page for your Sports section. By copying the template, you can retain the basic look and feel of the page without starting from scratch. When you turn it into a page for a specific section, you can give this page a unique URI and add any additional blocks and curation options.

To copy a template to a page, complete the following:

  1. Navigate to PageBuilder Editor > Templates.

  2. Select the section template. The Curate workspace opens.

  3. In the left pane, navigate to the Save as Page section.

  4. Complete the following:

    • Page Name - set a name for your page.

    • Page URI - set a unique name for the page, for example, /sports.

  5. Click Save Page.

The new, unpublished sports page opens in the Curate Workspace. From there, you can adjust the content sources, blocks, and other items and publish them as needed. This page now appears in your site's list of pages.
