Managing website restrictions

Use the Restrictions page in Global Settings to create and manage your website restrictions. Restrictions in Arc XP are rules that allow you to control what content is available by website in association with a distributor.

Note

Website restrictions are separate from geographic restrictions. Website restrictions allow content by website while geographic restrictions allow content based on region. For more information on geographic restrictions, see Managing geographic restrictions.

A website restriction consists of two items:

  • content types the restriction applies to (stories, images, galleries, videos)

  • websites where the content is allowed to appear (either individual websites or website groups)

You associate your restriction with one or more distributors because content is restricted based on its source. A single distributor can have multiple restrictions, for example, one restriction allowing images on certain website while another restriction controls stories and videos on different websites.

Restrictions work on two levels:

  • the authoring experience - users cannot see or add restricted content. For example, when inserting images or videos into articles, the search window filters out any content that users can't use based on primary website.

  • the Content API - the system provides a final filtering layer to ensure restricted content isn't shown to readers on blocked websites. When a reader requests content, the system performs the following actions and displays content accordingly:

    • documents with either no distributor or custom distributors are shown normally

    • documents with predefined distributors are checked against restrictions

    • an allow list of websites is created for each content type

    • the requesting website is compared against the allow list to determine if content should appear

Note

Website restrictions work only with distributors that you configure in Global Settings. Restrictions do not support content with custom distributors.

As a multi-site organization, you have content licensing agreements with various news providers. You have access to Associated Press videos that you can use on only some of your websites. This becomes particularly challenging when you promote content sharing across various websites.

To manage this, you create a restriction that specifies which of your websites are allowed to display Associated Press content. You then associate this restriction with your Associated Press distributor. When editors try to embed AP videos in articles, they see only the videos they're allowed to use based on the article's primary website. Additionally, Content API ensures readers on restricted websites cannot access the AP content.

Procedures

You can create restrictions to limit your content by website and geographic region.

Note

Changes you make to restrictions that are already applied to live content can take up to 15 minutes to affect viewers on your website.

  1. Navigate to Global Settings.

  2. Click Restrictions. The Restrictions page opens.

  3. Click add new restriction, or click the name of an existing restriction to make edits.

  4. Complete the following fields.

    • Name - enter a name for your description. We recommend choosing a name that clearly defines the purpose of the restriction.

    • Description - optionally, add a description.

    • Content Types - choose the content types this restriction applies to—image, story, or video.

    • Website Selection - select the website groups or individual sites you want to restrict content from. As you select sites, they move to the Selected Groups or Selected Sites section.

  5. Click save restriction.

You cannot delete or remove a restriction from Arc XP. If you no longer want to use the restriction, you can remove the resolver from the distributor it's associated with.
