Managing paywall entitlements

Use the Entitlements page in Subscription's Paywall to grant your customers access to specific sections or content types when a paywall is active.

At Arc XP, entitlements determine the content access granted when your customers buy a subscription. Entitlements categorize sections, sites, and content types, separating product SKUs from paywall controls. Each product might have multiple entitlements, but a paywall rule typically uses one entitlement to govern access.

Entitlements allow you to create cross-site products and bundling options because they are set on an organization level and are site-agnostic; in contrast, product SKUs rely on linked subscriptions for cross-site offerings. This provides a more flexible and efficient approach to managing customer access across multiple platforms.

After creation, an entitlement becomes available in the Entitlement drop-down menu on the Edit product page, which your team uses when creating products. For more details, see Managing products.

Arc XP recommends you start with two to five entitlements for your site and evolve your strategy according to the first results.

As an administrator of a news organization, you must implement a tiered access system for your website content. You can create different levels of access, such as basic access for general news and premium access for exclusive content and analysis. This allows you to offer various subscription options for different audience segments, maximizing your revenue potential.

You define Basic News Access and Premium Content Access entitlements, describing what type of content they unlock. Then, your marketing team can link these entitlements with their corresponding subscription products.

You then configure your paywall rules to specify when content is restricted and which entitlements allow users to bypass those restrictions. For example, general news articles could be accessible with the "Basic News Access" entitlement, while exclusive analyses and special features might require the "Premium Content Access" entitlement.

Procedures

To create an entitlement, complete the following:

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions > Paywall > Entitlements. The Entitlements page opens.

The Entitlements page shows a list of your existing entitlements and the following details:

    • Entitlement name - shows the entitlement name you defined.

    • ID - shows the entitlement ID you configured.

    • Associated products - shows the number of Product SKUs linked to that entitlement.

    • Date created - shows the entitlement creation date.

  2. Click Create new entitlement. The Create entitlement page opens.

  3. Enter the following details:

    • Name - enter a descriptive name for your entitlement.

    • Description - enter the entitlement's purpose.

You can update the name and description as needed in the future.

  4. Click Save.

The Product name appears under the Association section after you or your team associates this entitlement with a Product SKU.

To edit an entitlement, complete the following:

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions > Paywall > Entitlements. The Entitlements page opens.

  2. In your desired entitlement, click the ellipsis icon icon_ellipsis.png > Edit. The Edit entitlement page opens.

  3. Edit the entitlement Name or Description.

You cannot edit the Product's Association. To remove an entitlement, you must edit each product description.

  4. Click Save.

The edited entitlement appears on the Entitlements page and becomes available in the Entitlement drop-down menu when creating new products.

To delete an entitlement, complete the following:

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions > Paywall > Entitlements. The Entitlements page opens.

  2. In your desired entitlement, click the ellipsis icon icon_ellipsis.png > Delete. The Delete entitlement? window opens.

  3. Click Delete.

Warning

When you delete an entitlement linked to a product, your customers can no longer access the content while a paywall is active.

You need one or more entitlements for each of your products.

You add the entitlements from the Entitlement drop-down menu when creating each product. To learn how to create your products, see Configuring your offers.

To add entitlements to paywall rules, refer to Configuring paywall rules.

In the Entitlement section, check the Subscribed user (Entitlement) option and your newly created entitlement from the drop-down menu.
