Configuring rulesets

Use the Rulesets page in Subscriptions' Paywall to create collections of rules for a specific time-frame.

Each rule within a ruleset targets specific content and audience criteria, and includes a content budget and associated marketing offer. When a reader consumes content, the paywall evaluator checks if any rules in the ruleset are exhausted. It then determines whether the customer can view the content or must register or subscribe.

You can set rules within a ruleset to target various content attributes, including:

  • Content type - rules that enable access to a specific type of content, such as a story, video, gallery, or graphic.

  • Content restrictions - rules based on existing paywalls and their statuses.

  • Content section - rules applied to a particular section of your news site, such as Sports or Business.

From the main Rulesets page, you can:

  • search for a particular ruleset using the search bar at the top.

  • see the rules for each ruleset by clicking the left arrow icon.

Prerequisites

To create a ruleset, you must first create rules for your site. The Configuring paywall rules explains this process.

As a news site administrator, you must create a ruleset to provide limited free access to your website's Sports section, while requiring registration or subscription for full access.

You create a ruleset named Sports Preview, which includes rules offering three free articles to unregistered users. You add another rule checking if the customer has already viewed three articles and prompting them to register or subscribe to continue reading.

This ruleset enforces your marketing strategy for growing subscriber numbers.
