# Arc XP Subscriptions Paywall

Arc XP Paywall is a self-service system that lets you control how much content your readers can consume before needing to register or subscribe. It works as a client-side rules engine that evaluates readers’ attributes and behaviors and determines their content restrictions.

With Arc XP’s Paywall, you can:

- Create customized access rules based on the content type and audience criteria.
- Define content budgets before your customers hit the paywall; for example, allowing eight articles per month before requiring a subscription.
- Set the business strategy that best suits your organization, such as hardwall, freemium, or metered approaches.
- Configure Entitlements to ensure your subscribers bypass the paywall for content they’ve purchased access to.
